Frameless mirror add a sleek, modern and polished look to a room. With no frames, mirrors blend seamlessly into the space and effortlessly harmonize with the room’s overall style.

Hanging frameless mirrors can be difficult as the surface of the mirror does not lend itself to nails or screws. However, by using special mounting clips or glass/mirror adhesives, it is possible to hang frameless mirrors with minimal or no visible supports. It creates a clean, minimalist aesthetic that blends the mirror perfectly with the room’s design.

What You Need to Prepare

Hanging a frameless mirror requires a slightly different approach than hanging a regular mirror or a picture frame. Here’s a list of items you’ll need:

Basic Tools:

  • Level
  • Pencil
  • Window cleaner
  • Clean cloth

Adjustable Metal Mounting Clips

When using adjustable metal mounting clips to mount a frameless mirror, four clips are usually sufficient – two at the top and two at the bottom. The bottom clips stay in place and support the mirror’s lower edge. Meanwhile, the top clip slides upward, allowing the mirror to rest against the wall. Gravity or spring tension then prompts them to slide back, securing the mirror in place.

These adjustable mounting clips are known for being robust, reliable and secure. For optimal support, it is recommended that the pins be secured to studs rather than drywall. In higher humidity environments, the clips will create a small gap behind the mirror, promoting air circulation and reducing the risk of mould growth.

Whilst providing a secure installation, it should be noted that a small portion of the clips may be visible on the front edge of the mirror, which is a potential disadvantage of this method.

Glass/Mirror Adhesive

Glass/Mirror Adhesives provide a way to hang frameless mirrors without the need for any visible mounting hardware to create an elegant aesthetic. The adhesive typically cures in 15 to 30 minutes but requires a longer cure time of 24 to 48 hours for total stability. Unlike the mounting clip method, the mounting location is more forgiving as there is no need to fasten to studs or use drywall anchors.

However, an obvious drawback is the challenging removal process. Removing the mirror requires removing it from the wall, which can result in drywall chips, paint and drywall face paper. If there is enough space behind the mirror, an alternative removal method is to place a piano wire behind the mirror and see the mirror away from the wall.

Unless it is necessary to have no visible fasteners, the mounting clip method is generally preferred over the adhesive process. This method is more robust, reliable, quicker to install, and offers flexibility for future adjustments or removal.

Step 1: Determine Mirror Placement

Before delving into the tools:

  • Identify the ideal placement for your frameless mirror.
  • Ensure it is hung at eye level, neither too high nor too low.
  • Utilize a group to guarantee the mirror is not mounted at an awkward angle.

For added ease, consider enlisting the help of a friend during this step. Once you’ve pinpointed the optimal placement and are satisfied, mark the wall with a pencil to denote the intended position. This preliminary planning will set the foundation for a successful and aesthetically pleasing installation.

Step 1 Determine Mirror Placement

Step 2: Mark stud locations

Use the stud finder to identify the location of all wall studs behind and near the selected mirror location. Lightly mark each stud location above the top perimeter line and below the bottom perimeter line. You can make these marks directly on the wall or use a miniature painter’s tape as a non-permanent marker. This step ensures that you secure the mirror to strong, reliable wall studs while you install it, thus enhancing the overall stability and support of your frameless mirror.

Step 2 Mark stud locations

Step 3: Install Hardware

For both types of hardware, first locate the wall studs and then drill anchor holes. This extra step increases the security of the mirror hardware and ensures that it is securely fastened to the wall.

  • Use a stud finder to locate wall studs. Wall stud detectors beep when they detect the edge of a wall stud. Use these wall wedges to find clips or other hardware and mark these locations accordingly.
  • If using mirror clips, ensure these are located directly above and below the mirror location. Use a screwdriver to drill anchor holes at these marked points.
  • Insert the wall anchors into the drilled holes for added stability.
  • Screw the clips securely into the wall anchors to ensure a tight fit.
  • Finally, slide the mirror between the clips (if using mirror clips) or onto the pins (if using Z-clips) to ensure that the mirror is securely and steadily fastened to the installed hardware. This meticulous installation ensures the mirror’s longevity and stability on the wall.

Step 4: Cleaning

After successfully installing and securing your frameless mirror, the final step is to clean it thoroughly. The installation process tends to leave fingerprints and dirt on the glass surface, so wipe down the mirror with a dry cloth and glass cleaner before completing the task.

If your frameless mirror comes with a protective film, there is no need to use glass cleaner. Remove the protective film to reveal a polished and shiny mirror. Doing so will ensure that your frameless mirror looks great and maintains its clarity and shine for a polished appearance.

Step 4 Cleaning

The details of each step determine the quality of the final result. So let this patience and carefulness also become part of everyday life as you discover your reflection in the mirror.
